Cyberfair

I remember the days or nights, when i was worrying for something. My groupmates and I became very busy for the past month. We needed to work harder and longer. It is because we participated the National Cyberfair.

I remember that very day, when we were asked if we wanted to join the competition. Although I was hesitant, I knew I raised my hand. In that moment, a lot of questions came at the back of my mind. I was very uncertain if I could really accomplish what was needed in this competition. I thought that joining the Cyberfair was one big problem.

The theme for this year's Cyberfair is "Take Action and Unite". We created a website about the Local Culture, Music, and Art. We focused on the annual flower festival held Baguio called Panagbenga. Gathering information about it was a great experience. We were able to take photos during the parade though it was very crowded. We were able to interview Mr Anthony de Leon although he was busy. Of course, problems came across our way but it was worth it.

This cyberfair taught me a lot of lessons. Our teacher often said that when there is a will there is a way. It is true, determination is really needed for one to become successful. We also developed unity. It is needed in every group activites. Patience is another. Good things come to those who wait. I am grateful to those who helped us: our subject teacher, Mr Vincent Tabor, our classmates, and others.

I remember myself saying that this cyberfair was a big problem. But now, I could say that it was not. I would rather call it as a challenge. It is a challenge for us to go beyond our capabilities.

"If I control the Internet..."

My Big Appetite

I love to eat food! It is part of our daily lives. Some people like it while some people love it. We Filipinos love to eat that's why whenever there are special occasions like birthday's, graduations, anniversaries, and others, we prepare food. It makes our special moments memorable.

Here is a list of the food I love to eat:

Bulalo- I love to eat this Filipino dish whether the climate is cold or warm. It is a Filipino stew made from beef shanks and marrow bones. It is usually cooked with corn, pechay(chinese cabbage), carrots and potatoes. Even though it is a cholesterol filled delicacy, many people, including me, loves to eat it.

Lucky Me!Instant Mami Noodles- This thing is one of my life savers. Whenever typhoons occur, and current is off, this is what I usually eat. And also, when I am short of money, this one helps me. I like to eat this instant noodles because it's very easy: Easy to get, easy to prepare, easy to eat, and easy to be disposed. And one more thing, it tastes like real bulalo.

Pandesal- It is a rounded bread usually eaten by the Filipinos. It is a bread made of flour, eggs, lard, yeast, sugar, and salt. It is a very common food here in the Philippines. I prefer to eat it when it's warm and if it is eaten with beverages like coffee or hot chocolate. It is yummy even if it is eaten by itself.

Iced Tea- I often drink this during lunch and dinner. At home, we rarely drink softdrinks; we prefer iced tea and other beverage which are alike.

Desserts
Strawberries- Rarely eat this but whenever it is available, i eat a lot. I eat this with or without condensed milk, like what Filipinos usually do. I also like eating  this in the form of ice creams.

Halo-Halo- I love to eat this especially during summer. It is basically a mixture of of sweet preserved beans(red beans, chick peas), coconut meat (macapuno), jackfruit (langka), pounded dried rice (pinipig), sweet yam (ube), cream flan (leche flan), shreds of sweetened plantain (saba), filled with crushed ice, milk (or coconut milk) and  topped with ice cream. It is a sweet and creamy dessert.

By the way, here are the links for the pictures I used:

A Sensitive Topic

Last Saturday ( September 18, 2010) the 3rd year students of SLU-LHS had a seminar about human sexuality. I was one of them. At first, I was hesitant in coming because I thought it was a boring seminar. I doubted if I would learn something that would benefit me. But I realized, after the seminar, that I was wrong. I have learned a lot of things because of this seminar. Let me share some.
It is awful that most of the 3rd students perceive human sexuality as sexual intercourse and other related actions. Is human sexuality really limited to sexual intercourse? During the seminar, the guest speakers clarified what human sexuality is. According to them, Human Sexuality is classified into 3, namely: Primary, Affective, and Genital. Human sexuality is not only limited to the genitals but it is also how a person act as a male or female. It was depressing that most students were not serious about this talk.
At the first part of the seminar, first guest speaker discussed about why teenagers engage in premarital sex. She discussed 5 reasons why teenagers engage in premarital sex. First one is the need for intimacy- Teenagers who have suffered rejection and abuse from their parents and family usually strive to experience this primary need from others, usually from their boyfriend/girlfriend. Second is the need for belongingness- the desire to be accepted and understood. Third is Curiosity- teenagers want to have an experiment. Fourth is rebellion which is caused by unstable families. Lastly, it is a way to cope with stress- a teenager’s inability to cope with stress can easily transform into irresponsible behavior with harmful consequences. Are these reasons acceptable?  For me, it is a big no. I think these reasons are not good enough to initiate a premarital intercourse among teenagers. But sadly, in happens to some cases.
Then she asked a few males and females to answer some pressure lines which may come from their boyfriends/girlfriends suggesting to have an intercourse. She asked how the students would answer these pressure lines if ever it would be told to them. It was disappointing that most males and even some females took these pressure lines segment as a joke. They answered it in a manner that would soon result to premarital sex. I think that this is a big problem for us. This is just a proof that teenagers would easily give in and do what his girlfriend would want them to do. Proper mentality should be planted on the minds of these young teenagers to prevent a big mistake from happening.
Let’s continue with the second part. The second guest speaker emphasized on effects of premarital sex.  She presented some short video clips about premarital sex. It was about teenagers who made a right and a wrong decision. She said that a man would use love to gain pleasure while a woman would use pleasure to gain love. I think this is true to some cases. She made us more aware that premarital sex should not be done by stating the disadvantages and advantages of this immoral act.
I was not feeling well and sleepy that’s why I was not able to understand some ideas shared by the second guest speaker. But when she showed a video regarding a mother delivering a child, I was surprised. My drowsiness disappeared all of a sudden. Many were shouting and making noise. I think they were shocked. This is a sign that teenagers are not yet prepared to become a mother. One way or another, they should have realized why they should not have premarital sex. As I have said, they are not yet ready; they should enjoy school and their youth first while they can.
I could say that this seminar was helpful to us, the Lousians. Although I was hesitant to attend this seminar, I still find it very beneficial. It made us more aware in making good decisions. It showed us how to deal with these situations that would make us regret for the rest of our life.

Aquino's 10-point basic education agenda: Benifical or Detrimental?

1. 12-year Basic Education Cycle
When I was reading Noynoy Aquino's 10-point basic education agenda, this was the first one that caught my attention. Why? It's the first thing written in the webpage where i got it (http://barriosiete.com/noynoy-aquinos-10-point-basic-education-agenda/). No that was not the real reason. It caught my attention because while I was reading it, i asked myself a lot of questions: "Are we affected?",  "Should this be implemented this year?", "Does it mean that we would go through another year after 4th year?". While I was asking my self, i thought of the benefits and disadvantages of Aquino's first agendum.

I think that this has a good and a bad side. This could be beneficial because when Filipinos go to abroad, they would not have to study again because other countries adopt the 12-year basic education cycle while Philippines is still stuck to 10. This will increase Filipinos with potentials because they would gain more knowledge in school. The question is, Can the poor Filipinos finish this 12-year eduction? I don't think so. In the Philippines, many students were not able to finish school because of poverty. Parents of these student will have to work longer and harder. Some Filipino families send only their eldest to school so that he or she could work earlier and support the family. How can their eldest help them if their parents could not afford the 12-year education. I think that when this project is implemented, there would be and increase of drop-outs

In my opinion, the President should think about what would happen if this would be implemented. Maybe he should have thought of fixing the problem about the inability of parents to send their children to school before this project. He should prioritize on lessening the number of the uneducated before implementing  this 12-year education cycle. There are a lot of major problems to be solved here in our country that our President should focus on.

2. Universal preschooling for all
I think, this agendum is much suitable for our country now. This would increase the interest of young students in going to school. Maybe, the probability of students to graduate will increase because P-noy had said that it would be available to all children regardless of income.

3. Madaris education as a sub-system within the education system
This was a righteous idea of Aquino. It is just proper to practice equality among our citizens. This would promote unity within our country.

4. Technical vocational education as an alternative stream in senior high school.
This is a good idea because this would lessen people with no job. This would be beneficial to all high school students because they would experience and they would be more prepared for more job opportunities after college.

5. “Every child a reader” by Grade 1
This would lessen the illiterate in our country. Sadly, this would be implemented the end of the next administration (SY 2015-16).

6. Science and Math proficiency
I think this would be beneficial to our our country. This would increase the number of Filipinos with potentials. This could give a good reputation to the Philippines when the achievements of future Filipino scientists and mathematician would be recognized.

7. Assistance to private schools as essential partners in basic education
I think this is a good idea because this would be to all schools

8. Medium of instruction rationalized
This would make the Filipinos more intellectual because they would be trilingual. Filipinos would be able to express themselves without difficulties.

9. Quality textbooks
I think this would be made as soon as possible if Aquino is not really corrupt

10. Covenant with the local governments to build more schools
This would be beneficial but does our government have the budget?

Who, What, Why?

Hello everyone! I'll start my post by introducing myself. I am Cris Villanueva, born on December 24. I am a Junior in Saint Louis University Laboratory High School. I am a Filipino and of course, I live in the Philippines.

Obviously, I am a silent-type person. I don't talk often. I find it difficult to talk to other people. I seldom talk with my classmates, except for the people I share common interests with. I rarely recite in class. Even if I know the correct answer (which rarely happens), I would not spit it out to be recognized.

I have a guitar at home. I became interested in playing the guitar when we had to play it as a requirement for Music II. Sometimes I grab it and study pieces on the internet. Because I am ignorant in playing this instrument, I am taking guitar lessons. I could say that I am not good in playing this 6 stringed instrument. All I can say is I just tried.

I love to play sports, especially basketball. I play basketball not only for exercise, but also for leisure. I consider it as a fun game to play even if sometimes, I end up losing. Playing basketball is tiresome but for me, it's worth it because you would be able to play with friends and this sport would make you physically healthy.

I really like this sport that's why i would like to compare it to life. Life is also a game. We train in school to become better, we have teammates we should trust, and we have a basketball and a goal for us to accomplish. In basketball, we have teammates that we should trust and in life, we have friends. When the ball is passed to you, you should make a good decision, just like in life. When opportunities come, we should catch it.

Anyways, I have made this blog primarily as a requirement for THE III. Hopefully, I would be able to realize a better purpose on why I have created or should have continued blogging. Expect my upcoming posts to be related to sports, video games, and maybe music. Uhm , By the way, this is my first time to use a blogging site so please be patient with it.Please feel free to comment and post your opinions here. I would appreciate them. Don't hesitate to follow me and know more about me and my website- Where Nothing Happens.
